Children's Attractions
Wriggle and Rhyme
Wriggle & Rhyme is a music-based active movement programme for children aged 0-2. Offered in partnership with Sport Otago, Wriggle & Rhyme is designed to promote brain development through active movement and music. It also has the unintended benefit of parents socialising afterwards! Sessions are suitable for ages 0-2.
Storytime
Our Storytime sessions are designed for preschoolers aged 2-5. We entertain both children and parents with fun voices and our favourite picture books. Storytime encourages a lifelong love of reading, helps develop listening skills and is a great place for parents to meet. The Queenstown branch includes an age-appropriate craft to keep little hands busy. Storytime is suitable for preschoolers.
LEGO® Club
A very popular after school activity targeting our primary school aged patrons. While we mostly let children lead with LEGO® Club, the librarian will sometimes offer challenges and showcase LEGO® books for inspiration. LEGO® Club is a great activity where children engage with each other, learn to manage resources, and personalities in a fun social setting. LEGO® Club is suitable for all primary school aged kids.
Reading to Dogs
Reading out loud can be intimidating and scary to a new reader. Reading to Dogs aims to help children improve their oral literacy skills, self-confidence, and self-esteem by reading to a gentle, non-judgmental, therapy dog. This is a free programme delivered at several of our branches by Outreach Therapy Pets and St John New Zealand.
Reading to Dogs is suitable for all primary school aged kids.
Video Games Club
Calling all gamers! Join our new Video Games Club programme for tamariki and rakatahi (10-18 years old) at Arrowtown Library.
Gaming is a fantastic way to learn new digital skills, practice problem-solving and enjoy collaborative play. This trial programme is part of our braoder digital inclusion strategy, with all games rated for General Audienes (G) or with Parental Guidance (PG). Players under 14 years must have a guardian present in the library.
Please note – our children’s programmes run during term time only and our website contains all up-to-date information.
